In chapter one it explains that Jenny Fields, Garps mother, went to jail for hitting a soldier. The soldier tried to reach under her skirt so then she hit him with a scalpel. Jenny works in a hospital, she is a nurse. She takes care of Sergeant T.S. Garp whi is slowly dying. Jenny uses him to get herself pregnant.
